Maintenance of Hardwood Flooring
|

Cleaning and Care
Hardwood floors are
easy to clean:
•Sweep, vacuum or dust
mop .
•Clean spills with
cloth, paper towel or napkins.
•Maintain with a
leading brand of prefinished hardwood floor cleaner. *
Do Not Damp Mop -
Caution: Wood floors and water do not mix! Use only the
cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer of your
hardwood floor.
Vacuum Regularly -
Small stones, mud, and dirty grit tracked in from outdoors
can scratch your wood floor's finish. Also vacuum using a
soft bristle-brush attachment.
Use Proper Chair
Glides - Narrow wheels, sharp wooden legs or metal furniture
legs can scratch and dent hardwood floors. Floor protectors
are an inexpensive way to protect your hardwood floor
investment. Any furniture that rests directly on a hardwood
floor should have felt protectors, or furniture coasters
under each of its feet. For extremely heavy objects such as
a piano, use wide, non-staining rubber cups.
Do Not Use Oil Soaps -
Many over-the-counter oil-based soaps and wax-based cleaning
products tat may damage or dull the finish of your wood
floor. Use only the cleaning products recommended by the
manufacturer of your hardwood flooring.
Never Wax a Urethane
Floor - Never use a paste wax on its surface. Paste wax may
form a sticky film on the floor, allowing tracked-in dirt to
stick to the wood finish. Polyurethane finishes will not
adhere to any wax and adding a fresh coat of polyurethane to
your floor is very difficult.
Wipe Spills
Immediately - Whenever liquid spills onto your hardwood
floor, use a slightly damp white cloth or paper towel to
immediately clean and dry the affected area. For more
difficult spots, follow the cleaning procedures recommended
by your floor's manufacturer.
Room Temperature and
Relative Humidity - Maintain Relative humidity in the
room/building between 30% to 50% year round. Proper use of a
humidifier/de-humidifier is recommended. Keep room
temperature within a range of 60 0
to 800
F year round.
Avoid Excessive Direct
Sun Exposure - Direct sun exposure for extended period of
time can dry and/or fade natural wood. Limit direct sun
exposure by closing curtain and blinds during the day when
possible.
